Who we are
With Red Dot Projects, Red Dot realises different formates in order to draw attention to current topics, trends
and developments in the design industry. These include seminars and conferendes as well as exhibitions, fair
presentations or the organisation of industry-specific design competitions.
From 2011 to 2015, the Red Dot Design Museum organised several seminars, workshops and exhibitions in the course of the
European project “PROUD” (People Researchers Organisations Using Design for co-creation and innovation) and
was host to the final conference “Design for societal challenges”. In order to promote the innovative strength
of different sectors, Red Dot furthermore plays an active part in the organisation of other design competitions
as for example “caravaning design award: innovations for new mobility” together with Messe Düsseldorf
or the “interzum award: intelligent material & design” in cooperation with Koelnmesse.
Since 2012, Red Dot hosts the Xiamen International Design Week in China, a trade fair for premium design. With 300,000 visitors in 2015 alone,
it has become an important platform for manufacturers and designers in the Asia-Pacific region. It offers product exhibitions,
talks on design as well as the seminar programme “Red Dot Academy”. Furthermore, in the course of the fair, furthermore
the yearly competition “China Good Design” takes place in cooperation with the Xiamen Media Group.
It aims to make premium products of international companies visible for the Asian market and to award their quality.
Red Dot Projects
China Good Design
China Good Design is the competition, which recognises well-designed products by Chinese and international companies and raises their profile on the Chinese market. To this end, a jury assesses all of the entries nominated on site in the southern Chinese city of Xiamen and awards the China Good Design Award to the best designs.
All of the products nominated and the winning products are presented at the “Xiamen International Design Week – Red Dot in China”. The event takes place in the “International Conference and Exhibition Center” in Xiamen. Around 150,000 visitors are expected to attend. In addition, the award-winners benefit from extensive communication measures, can use the winners’ label and are published in the China Good Design Yearbook as well as in the online exhibition.
interzum award
Every two years, “interzum award: intelligent material & design” awards the best designs in the international supplier industry for the furniture and interior decorating industries. Numerous international exhibitors of the “interzum” entered the contest to win the respected industry label. All competition entries were examined by five respected and independent international experts from design and architecture. They assessed the design quality of the products live and on site at Koelnmesse on the basis of criteria such as the degree of innovation, material quality, shape and functionality.
PROUD Forum
As a hybrid discipline, design walks a tightrope between economic success and social responsibility, between creativity and continuity, between technical innovation and human conservatism. How does design react to this social change? What methods and tools does it use in an effort to respond to – or even influence – this realignment of social and economic realities? How can design values be conveyed in a society where the word “design” is applied to almost everything? These and other questions were discussed during the PROUD Forum “Design for societal challenges” on 8 May 2014 in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen.
PROUD (People Researchers Organisations Using Design for co-creation and innovation) is a European project with the objective to make Europe a better place by co-designing for all and by all. PROUD brings designers together with public organisations, businesses and user communities to experience the added value of design thinking and design, while working on innovative solutions for today’s real world problems. PROUD helps and supports designers to have the right facilities, knowledge and expertise to play this key role in innovating, improving and consolidating Europe.
caravaning design award
The “caravaning design award: innovations for new mobility 2012/2013” honoured the best designs of the motorhome and caravaning industry. The exhibitors of the trade fair are once again called upon to prove their design strength by international comparison.
Besides a jury, which consists of renowned experts from the trade press and design industry, the public could also cast their vote in 2012, for the first time: Via an online voting system, the public prize “caravaning design award: the public choice” was awarded according to aspects of design aesthetics. The special award “caravaning design award: best interior design” was again awarded by the jury. The title honours innovative interior design solutions and highlights its growing importance in the industry.
